Unframed

Frame-less is where we’re going.
Since the dawn of television our screens have been framed.
It was a natural progression, after all painting, the foremost visual art had been framed for centuries.
Frames hid the electronics, plus tubes weren’t able to project images all the way to the border..
We all want bigger screens.
Just look at the progression in size mobile phone and TV screens have had in recent years.
Nobody wants a bigger phone though, the logical step is to make the screen bigger while sacrificing the frame.
Area has to be used more efficiently.

New technologies in manufacturing enable getting closer to the edge.
The boundaries between what is on-screen and what is off, blur, and cease to exist.
OS X and Vista’s transparent menus are just a stepping stone before getting rid altogether of
the frames. I bet the next versions of these operating systems will be as frame-less as possible.

Frames constrain freedom.
Media wants to leak out.
