The Changing Domestic Landscape
As we pack, sell, and digitize our media we will be left with surplus space in our homes…
How will we fill up this material void?
What will our houses look like?

Gardens come inside.
Not pots and planters, but an evolution of the colonial patio.
Plants are the centerpiece of the home, where connecting with nature is of utmost importance.
A percentage of it is devoted to edible plants and herbs.

Surfaces will be dominated by screens.
Watch a movie, photos, art, sur/hyperreal effects, waterfalls and forests; anything.
Mutating video breaks away from the rectangular frame.
This is the main night light source.

Walls will be as important as ever, even if their purpose as bearing structures fades away.
Huge windows become a possibility.
Moving walls create changing floor plans that suit your mood or use.

Open space wins and lets the uncluttered mind wander more.
More area is devoted to air.

Decoration and art merge.
Pieces will be highly personal and reflect who you are.
Most are useful beyond their aesthetic value.

Materials’ importance grows.
Walls, rugs, paint, cement, wood, and fabric will be joined by more specialized, washable, easily exchangeable, multi-use materials.
Even if the graphics convey a sense of minimalism, I highly doubt that is the way forward.
Humans will always be packrats, but the things that surround us, will change dramatically in the coming years.
