Music is Free

Before there was copyright protection artists made money by playing live.
Recorded music is going back to it’s roots…
A few years from now music will be completely free; art/entertainment to be enjoyed by all.
Why pay for a digital recording?
Think of records and tracks as promotion to go see the artist’s live show.
If you like somebody’s songs you’ll probably end up going to see them when they come around.
Maybe you even end up buying a T-shirt!
A recording can be manipulated at will, but a good performance is hard to reproduce.
When the medium shifts back to the live show, talent becomes important again.
Is Trent the only one who get’s it?
He gives away the music, is transparent, tells you how much he sold, talks to his fans, etc.
No gimmick, no bullshit.
We’re grown up…
Stop fucking with us and get on with the show.

The problem is that bands toured (at a financial loss, mind you) to support record sales. Under your scheme, musicians will not be able to continue making music. Maybe the ones who became rich and popular back when they could sell recrords (i.e., Trent Reznor) can get away with it, but that is temporary and doomed to fail eventually.
I wonder, why should only music be free? Let’s take your idea seriously, and do away with all intellectual property! All software is now free. Anyone selling a service, rather than a product can no longer charge for it! Sounds great!
Lastly, I’m just guessing, but I bet you are the guy in the front row of concerts with your cellphone recording the show.

Tim, if bands tour at a financial loss what’s the difference of moving the loss to the music and turn a profit playing live?
You don’t need money to make music, you need talent and skill.
Free music is going to happen whether you like it or not.
I did not invent the concept, it’s just the way things are going.
It’s evolution baby!!!
I see many new bands that have gotten tons of exposure by giving away their songs.
Exposure = more work, more fans, more money!
Simple math.
Yes! I do think intellectual property is up for a great renewal! (I’ll write about it soon).
I drink my own medicine. If you look around my site you can see anything is up for grabs.
Designs, drawings, songs, take whatever you want, but cite my work.
That’s all I want.
I am the guy in the front row, but I’ve never recorded a concert.
I’m all for living the moment.
You, on the other hand sound like a washed-up record exec wondering where it all went downhill…
Missing the tequila, coke, and whores on the company expense account?
Thanks for the comment!
