Color Splash

hiropon.jpg

Takashi Murakami gave a color treatment to Louis Vuitton bags turning the boring brown bags into a colorful affair… What most people don’t know is that he as a very prolific artist. He paints, sculpts, and creates inspiring pieces deeply rooted in modern Japanese pop culture. I couldn’t find an official website, but here are a few starting points:

Weaving History

warrug.jpg

After the USA invaded Afghanistan in late 2001, rug weavers started to feature 9/11 inspired designs for their rugs. They had done it before with the Russians… It’s truly amazing how they weave Kalashnikovs, bombs, and airplanes into a rug that tells their history and hardships. Warrug has a big collection of these and all are available for sale.

Spimes

Bruce Sterling’s speech for SIGGRAPH 2004: When Blobjects Rule the Earth.
Keep an eye on him, read his books… he knows.

Greys

Marker rendering is a dying art. 3D computer renderings have nearly incapacitated designers… nobody draws much anymore, so it’s nice to see an artist like Feng Zhu do a step by step rendering; the hard way!

Burn Baby Burn

A good thing in the Olympics is seeing the new torch design. The Athens 2004 website has the history of torches from the first one in 1936 to the latest.

Portofino

Street Tagger

Political activism brings out creativity in some people. Josh Kinberg built a bicycle that spray paints SMS messages sent to it. I don’t wanna spoil it for you, go watch the video. It’s a pity a project this good has to have a political overtone to it. The technology gets lost in the rhetoric… but, it is extremely cool anyway.

V4 Power

monacov4.jpg

I am a sucker for watches… just love ‘em. TAG Heuer’s new Monaco V4 is a good looking piece. Instead of gears it is driven by tiny rubber belts, and the automatic winding mechanism moves back and forth instead of around. All this doesn’t make for e better watch, but at least it has some fresh ideas in there. Watch the video (first half sucks big time, but the watch animations are worth waiting for).

Coat Hanger Astronaut
