Seti@home

2003.05.30

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Yeah… The universe is just too big for us to be alone.
You can help to find other civilizations by lending your computer when idle. Seti@home is a program
that runs like a screensaver (when your computer is not being used). It analyzes data gathered
from the giant Arecibo radio telescope.
By using the power of many idle computers around the world seti@home can analyze data at a faster rate
than if they were have a supercomputer working for them.
So how do they pay back your effort?
If your computer is involved in the detection, you will be listed as a co-discoverer.
Wouldn’t that be nice???

A Gold Filled Chest

2003.05.27

I have always been fascinated by treasure hunts….Geo Caching is a hi-tech treasure hunt:
You need a GPS. Use the website to look for treasures hidden in your country or area,
then with the coordinates provided look for the treasure. It can be anything…
plus it’s always nice if you can add something for the person who put it there….Hmmm….I want a GPS!!

Fascinating Facts

2003.05.26

When I was about 11 years old I found a book in my house called Fascinating Facts. It mentioned
fact after fact on various themes…I would read it as often as I could and would try to memorize it.
I thought all this knowledge might turn out to be useful someday. (useful for driving my family mad)…
Every now and then when I feel the need for useless knowledge I visit: Coolquiz
Beware, you might be the next victim of my facts!

Lorbuscam

2003.05.23

Now you can see me in all of my glory everyday!
Just click on the lorbus cam button and yes…hm..hmmm that’s me.
I’ll capture an image once a day. I don’t think I’ll setup a live feed…because,
well because you wouldn’t want to see me picking my nose would you?

Perfectly Ambiguous

2003.05.19

Ahhhhhh….better than magic!
The shadow of the motorbike is projected on the ground by the careful placement of 848 pieces of cutlery.
It is the work of none other than Shigeo Fukuda master of the ambiguous. Let me know if you can find better
websites of him! Taken from the book “The Art of looking Sideways” by Alan Fletcher.

Pale Blue Dot

2003.05.16

Take a look at the Pale Blue Dot…an excerpt of a book by Carl Sagan.

It’s true!

Fear Propaganda

2003.05.12

On saturday night I went to a Massive Attack concert with Mitla, Juanco, and Fabiana.
I had waited anxiously for this concert…hell I got my ticket in january.
Well, let me tell you it was a huge disappointment. I was biased. I was waiting for the best.
Having already seen them in 1998 when Mezzanine just came out.

Well this time it was a lot different. For one thing they had huge led screens that were continually
belching out information. Latitude, longitude, places, time, facts…Supposedly being updated in real time…
hahahaha…yeah right….specially when you could read that the software’s last update was: 01/01/2003.

They flashed italian words on the screen…personal things..san siro, cadorna, duomo, inter. Words that made you
feel like they know you, that they like you..bullshit…Download a fucking italian dictionary search Milan’s landmarks
and you’ll get the same results. I kept thinking to myself, “Am I the only one realizing this?” I turned around and Mitla was as incredulous as I.
The thought that these screens of info would have never been possible if not for Jenny Holzer crossed my mind continually.
This morning while looking for Jenny Holzer websites the first phrase that I read was:

“There is a fine line between information and propaganda”

No phrase would have given a better explanation…I spent more than 60 euros to go see propaganda…bad propaganda last updated: 01/01/2003.
Bush this, Bush that, America, blah, blah, blah….Yeah I don’t agree with much of USA’s foreign policy. But don’t try to sell it to me as entertainment.

Oh…and how was the music? While my brain was being brainwashed, I heard bits of their former magic. Great songs lost amid the chaos.

Note to Massive Attack:
The is only so much bandwidth of info that people can handle…the screens took most of it!
Loose the screens, and drop that big bass again.

Laws of Robotics

2003.05.09

Isaac Asimov first postulated his three “Laws of Robotics” in 1940. The were designed to protect humans,
so that no robot could harm a person.

1: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2: A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

In 1985 he detected the need for the first law to be extended which protected individual human beings,
so it would protect humanity as a whole. He added the zeroth law, which states:

0: A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

Girasole

2003.05.07

I have been working on this lamp for the past months. It’ll be ready by the end of the may.
It looks really simple, but solving the physics involved was the hard part. It is about 180cm high,
and yeah i’ll probably make a table version and an applique.
The base is in marble or cast metal…it weighs about 6kg. The shade will be in translucent
synthetic parchment paper..It rotates 360 degrees and tilts more than 15.

Grindip

2003.05.06

Fast progressive techno. It works best after 2:00 am…..ohh, and yeah you really
need big sub-woofers, and a high speed connection for the impatient.
This song is email-ware, so if you download it you need to send me an email…fair isn’t it???
Hope you like it, now go and wake up the neighbors…..

Grindip (6.1 MB 5:19).

Cockeyed

2003.05.05

Cockeyed is one amazing website!
It has the famous “How Much is Inside? Adventures”, great pranks, bad things, funny things,
anything that sparks Rob Cockerham’s imagination…..
